The Link Between Elevated Blood Glucose Levels and Dementia

As a follow up to my last post on Magnesium L-threonate, I wanted to share the link to dementia and elevated blood glucose levels.

In a study involving 2067 members of Group Health which is a non-profit HMO, who agreed to have their blood glucose levels tracked for nearly seven years on average, some of the participants had Type 2 Diabetes when the study began and MOST DID NOT. None had dementia.

This study showed that higher blood glucose levels are associated with a greater risk of dementia, even in those who were not diabetic. The results were published in the new England Journal of medicine (2013) and may hopefully change the way we think about blood sugar and the brain said,  Paul Crane, lead author and associate professor of medicine at University of Washington.

The test was well done and monitored closely. I will not get into all the details here, however I took NOTE of some conclusions. Among those whose blood sugar averaged 115 milligrams per deciliter, the risk of dementia  as 18% higher than among those at 100 mg/dl which is just slightly lower. In contrast those with average glucose levels of 190 mg/dl had a 40% HIGHER risk of dementia than those whose levels were 160 mg/dl.

In terms of common sense with Type 2 Diabetes becoming an epidemic in America and elsewhere, we need to focus on DIET AND EXERCISE AS OPPOSED  to the latest FDA approved miracle drug that a lot of folks interpret as being allowed to eat anything they want because they have an Insulin pump or some new and FDA approved wonder drug they can take just once a week and eat anything they want.

Personally I believe it doesn't work that way!

We need to start immediately avoiding the crunchi/munchie isle of the grocery store, staying away from empty calorie, high sugar, high sodium content foods, devoid of fiber and nutrients and loaded with chemicals and additives and colored dyes etc.

In place of the junk foods with their zillion dollar advertising campaigns we need to start eating large raw salads every day with a wide variety of fruits and veggies.

We need to abandon the cereal isle except for perhaps Quaker Steel cut or one min oatmeal. Instead of reaching for the sugar bowl, use "Stevia in the Raw". Add some fresh or frozen blueberries and perhaps a few fresh grapes. I also made the transition to sugar free Almond Milk vs. dairy.

  • STOP eating approximately 2 hours before bedtime so you sleep better.
  • START walking every day if possible and at least 4X weekly if not possible.
  • DO some core strengthening exercises every day including abdominal and push ups etc.
  • GET off all the fizzy drinks, especially Pepsi, coke etc. whether sugar free or regular. They make your interstitial fluid acid instead of slightly alkaline which is unhealthy.
  • STOP smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • CUT back on the alcohol.
  • PASS up the fast food chains and quit washing down triple-decker cheeseburgers with a 1/2 gallon of sugar laden diet colas. I was 8 years old when McDonald's opened their first fast food restaurant in 1955 in Arizona. I was guilty of eating there many times over the years when I had a business to run and lived in the fast lane so to speak. I rarely eat lunch out anywhere these days.

We have become a society of the easy fix, and we are literally bombarded 100 times a day with prescription drug ads promising to be the cure for almost anything.

YOU CAN DO IT!

God Bless,

Dan

Genesis 1:29

“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
